Inside the Prisons

Providing Emotional, Spiritual, and Reintegration Support for Inmates and Their Families.

Spiritual Support

Priest and Ministers of the Eucharist visit prisons regularly and offer Holy Mass on a weekly basis.

Volunteers run prayer services, alpha Courses, and Bible studies. Prisoners are able to learn more about scripture, Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Restorative Justice and Family Support

Restorative Justice approaches crime as breaking relationships between the offender, victim and community, rather than breaking the law. Restorative justice promotes restoration, restitution and reconciliation between those affected by the crime. The healing enables each person to continue their lives without the devastating effects of the crime. It is a unique way of building a safe, crime free, South Africa

Basic Education Project

Many families experience financial hardship when a parent is incarcerated. Children often now face living with a single unemployed mother or father or be moved into the care of a grandparent whose only income is a South African Social Security Agency pension. Providing school supplies such as a school uniform, books and stationery helps ensure children can attend school with the materials they need to learn effectively. The provision of school supplies also reduces the financial pressure on the caregivers of these children. The provision reduces stigma and exclusion as children have the opportunity of being fully attired in full school uniform, encourages regular school attendance, it improves the academics as children have access to the materials needs so they can better focus on their school work. This project helps with the overall and long-term wellbeing of children and education provides better employment opportunities

ART

Research has revealed that the process of producing art can decrease the number of disciplinary reports written on inmates who participated in an arts program (Brewster, 1983), and the California Department of Corrections (1987) revealed that recidivism decreased for those who participated in the state’s Arts In Corrections program.
